Amethyst Traits & Properties

The amethyst gemstone is a deep violet precious stone that has been used in jewelry and decoration as early as ancient Rome.  Amethysts are one of three semiprecious stones whose colors indicate which mineral they derive from. Quartz crystals have an iron content that gives them their smoky color, while amethyst gems originate from aluminum silicates or compounds of carbon with metallic oxides like titanium oxide, making them purple in color. This element makes this gemstone vulnerable to scratching over time due to the metals being soft versus quartz crystal's durability; however natural flaws also happen during growth because there are so many chemical elements involved.
